Hair Shampoo - Choosing a Hair Shampoo For Cooler Weather!

!±8± Hair Shampoo - Choosing a Hair Shampoo For Cooler Weather!

As the cooler (er, colder) months start creeping in, our hair becomes faced with the prospects of dryness, fly-away and static. As temperatures drop, air becomes denser and humidity and moisture content in the atmosphere and hair decrease. Picking the right hair shampoo can save you a lot of problems.

A Couple of Things to Consider

One - As temperatures drop, sebaceous glands at the root pore produce less sebum (hair oil). Hair oil coats and protects the follicle shaft and helps maintain and retain hydration.

Two - Colder weather is often associated with low pressure systems bringing windy, cold air down from Canada (assuming you live in the continental U.S.). Wind combined with dry air accelerates evaporation and increases static everywhere - especially in our hair.

Third - As temperatures drop, air becomes less dense and loses its ability to hold moisture. Part of what helps moisturize our hair is the ambient humidity in the air.

Given cooler temperatures are almost here, let's look at some good options for maintaining healthy, moisturized hair.

Defending Against Dry Hair

First, use caution when styling. After using a hair shampoo and your favorite conditioner, steaming the moisture out with a flat iron or hair dryer puts you back to square one. Use cooler setting to dry and set your style.

Second, avoid perms, color or chemical treatments. That's easier said than done - according to my wife; but, chemicals, perms and color treatments often deplete hair of moisture. Your hair may look great, but stripping hydration will come back to haunt you - soon.

Third, if possible, avoid the weather. Again, easier said than done. But staying inside with a humidifier running will help reduce static and frizz while improving control. Outside activities will wind blow your hair and subject it to the low humidity/dew point atmosphere.

Fourth, take a moment to find a hair shampoo that is formulated to infuse moisture. Moisturizing shampoos often use natural or botanical ingredients which are not prone to stripping moisture. They often have topical moisturizers that coat the follicle shaft and improve moisture content. We favor hair shampoo with Emu Oil, Panthenol and Jojoba Oil for moisturizing shampoos.

Emu Oil is transdermal, meaning it penetrates into the skin (and pores) and is a natural moisturizer. Jojoba Oil, a naturally derived plant extract, mimics sebum and improves hair health, cleans and helps to hydrate...a pretty potent and helpful ingredient.

As weather cools and air becomes drier, don't overdo the styling, try to avoid too many treatments, use a humidifier if possible, and pick a hair shampoo that is designed to help your hair maintain and retain moisture and hydration.
